NATIONAL LATINO MEDIA COUNCIL (NLMC)/NATIONAL HISPANIC MEDIA COALITION (NHMC) LATINO TELEVISION WRITERS PROGRAM
For over a decade, the NLMC/NHMC Latino Television Writers Program has yielded the next generation of talented writers, including: Davah Avena (Devious Maids, East Los High); Gina Lucita Monreal (NCIS,
Brothers and Sisters); Silvia Olivas (Elena of Avalor); Sierra Teller Ornelas (Superstore, Happy Endings); and Spiro Skentzos (Grimm). The five-week, Los Angeles-based, intensive program gives participants the opportunity to develop at least one television spec script under the guidance of an entertainment industry professional preparing them for writing program submissions, creative meetings and
potential series staffing.
Disney | ABC Television Group is a sponsor of the annual NLMC/NHMC Latino Television Writers Program. NHMC is a non-profit, media advocacy organization established in 1986 in Los Angeles, California. Along with the NLMC, which began in 1999, NHMC has strived to: improve the image of American Latinos as portrayed by the media; increase the number of American Latinos employed in all facets of the media industry; and advocate media/telecommunications policies that benefit the Latino community.
About the Program
During the five-week, Los Angeles-based, intensive program (October and November), participants create a mock writers room led by an entertainment executive to develop at least one television spec script. The workshop-style setting provides a collaborative environment where participants pitch story ideas and engage in notes sessions – training them how to incorporate others’ notes into their writing, as well as preparing them for writing program submissions, creative meetings and potential series staffing.
HOW TO APPLY
Deadline for submissions is typically late March to early August. Please visit www.nhmc.org/writersprogram/ for further information and application details.
